EEFF 2024 - October 13: Fair Trade Day - Session 2

Hidden in Plain Sight* - "Hidden in Plain Sight" shines a light on a rarely discussed aspect of the safari industry, uncovering the pervasive economic leakage and exploitation perpetuated by foreign-owned companies across Africa. ARMEA - “If you listen to nature, it will lead the way…” Elder Gagaj Taimanav Steeped in symbolism and no larger than a child’s hand, the diminutive bird known as the Armea is found in only one place on Earth: the Pacific island of Rotuma. After scores of performances around the world and years away from Rotuma, ARMEA opens as the dedicated dancers and musicians of Rako Pasefika make their long awaited return home to the island. Arriving by air yet received just as their seafaring predecessors were, the Rako team engages with creative elders in the hopes of revitalizing ancient stories that are in danger of being forgotten. As Rako prepares to perform a new production inspired by the totemic Armea, their relationships with elders, knowledge keepers, healers, artisans and cultural custodians reveal deep and reciprocal connections to this ancient land and to the immense ocean from which it rises. Both an offering to those who have guided the way — such as the hån lep he rua sacred women — and a promise to sustain sacred artforms for generations to come, ARMEA is an ode to all that is small yet sacred. UNDAMMED: AMY CORDALIS AND THE FIGHT TO FREE THE KALAMATH - After witnessing a massive fish kill on her ancestral home waters, Yurok tribal attorney Amy Bowers Cordalis dedicated her life to reversing the generations-long destruction wrought by the Klamath River dams. Undammed follows her journey to free the Klamath, from testifying before Congress to passing down fishing traditions within her young family. Now that the Klamath dams are finally coming down, she remains confident that the future of her tribe is bright. “It’s not a test,” Bowers Cordalis says of the largest dam-removal project in US history. “It will work.” Life in the Land: The Mighty Few - Iikooshtaka’atbaatchaache, home of the Mighty Few. Historically, and still today, the Mighty Few (a district of the Crow Nation in today's Southeast Montana) have proven their name through resourcefulness, determination, and strength in unity. Witness the process of this community strengthening their connection to identity, the land, and community togetherness. Through grassroots efforts, the Mighty Few are guiding actions that create necessary healing, economic opportunities, and self-determination to thrive into the future. *Attending Filmmaker: Rachel Levy (Hidden in Plain Sight) Community Partners: Cafe Mam Action Events: Workshop @ BRING recycling 11 am - 1 pm Talk with Jose Fernando led by Cafe Mam 3:30-5pm: “The Future of Ethical Coffee: Indigenous Farmers Take The Lead” @ Eugene Art House Jose Fernando Rodriguez Lopez (Fernando), Coordinator and Advisor, Union of Organic Coffee Producers Majomut.
