EEFF 2024 - October 17: Climate Change Day

Reunite US - Anyone, anywhere can make a difference, but combining that individual with other like-minded individuals can start a movement and cultural change. Through this theme, we specifically look at the issue of single-use plastics. We highlight the key players in the single-use plastic ban that occurred in Honolulu in 2019, but took more than a decade of work leading up to its passing. We look at why, at this point in time, legislation has become a necessary force to deal with human’s negative impact on the environment. Individuals, businesses, and government influence each other and when all three components work in sync to achieve similar goals we can change how society functions now and in the future. Crime Scene to Courtroom - Everyday hundreds of thousands of threatened species - mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, plants, and invertebrates - are being slaughtered around the world for their tusks, horns, skins, scales, flesh and more. Such is the sheer magnitude of this illegal trade that wildlife rangers in parks and sanctuaries, particularly in Africa, face a round-the-clock battle to snare the perpetrators. With increasingly severe penalties, the perpetrators of wildlife crimes are using skilled defence lawyers to place doubt on the evidence and escape conviction. But authorities are fighting back and now Edinburgh-based TRACE Wildlife Forensics Network, working with TRAFFIC International, have helped Malawi develop their first wildlife forensic lab, as well as train the highly skilled wildlife rangers in globally recognised evidence collection and storage methods, to ensure evidence makes it from the crime scene to the courtroom. This new facility, which was made possible thanks to funding from players of People's Postcode Lottery, will allow Malawi to use DNA techniques to ensure wildlife criminals are brought to justice. Through the voices of Malawian rangers, scientists, and prosecutors, this film sees the impact of the UK team sharing their world-leading knowledge of the latest evidence collection, security, and analysis techniques, with local rangers and scientists on the ground. All-American Ruins: Nevele Grand Hotel* - The Nevele Grand Resort in Ellenville, NY sits abandoned on 500+ acres near the foot of the Catskill Mountains of New York. What used to be a point of pride for Ulster County is now a painful, crumbling relic - with many stories to tell. For All-American Ruins creator Blake Pfeil, it is also a dreamscape, an artistic playground to reflect on questions about American history, culture, community folklore, economics, the environment, and mental health; and for the viewer, it's an invitation to activate their imagination as a tool for healing. By the Power Plant - The steaming cooling towers of coal power plants are both beautiful and frightening. They are everywhere on our planet, but the people living in their shadows we rarely get to meet. In this film they tell us about the most important things in their lives, about what is closest to their hearts. Shot in front of these massive symbols for the big question of our times, the testimonies create a subtle and moving drama. Electrifying Eugene* - Electrifying Eugene offers a first-hand look at how cities can navigate pushback from the gas industry to pursue viable pathways to decarbonization. Following the work of Aya Cockram of Fossil Free Eugene, Arjorie Arberry-Baribeault of Beyond Toxics, Jan Hasselman of Earthjustice, Danny Noonan of Breach Collective, and Eugene’s Mayor Lucy Vinis, we explore how one community’s efforts to pursue electrification is being met with opposition from Oregon’s largest “natural” gas utility, Northwest Natural — and how by harnessing a groundswell of community support for fossil fuel controls, they are able to push back. *Attending Filmmakers: Blake Pfeil (All-American Ruins) and Lauren Iverson (Electrifying Eugene) Community Partner: Beyond Toxics Action Event: Workshop led by Filmmaker Lauren Iverson @ Eugene Art House - Panelists include: Aya Cockram (Breach Collective) — acockram@gmail.com Danny Noonan (Co-Fonder, Climate and Energy Strategist at Breach Collective) Arjorie Aarberry-Baribeault (West Eugene Community Organizer at Beyond Toxics) — aab@beyondtoxics.org Jan Hasselman (Senior Attorney at Earthjustice) — jhasselman@earthjustice.orgEEFF 2024 - October 17: Climate Change Day showing at: October 17, 6:15 pm
