EEFF 2024 - October 12: Youth Day - Session 1

Our Flags, "New Glory" - Sixth grade students make flags that represent themselves, their cultures, communities, and land. Water, Star Medicine - Dr. Lisa Spencer assigns her Santa Fe middle school students the study of water. They traveled to sites to explore the Rio Grande, drought in New Mexico, and farming in the desert by early Pueblo peoples. Interviews were conducted that include the research of New Zealand Māori Scientist, Veda Austin. This film also explores water beyond the science realm to include the emotional, historic, and spiritual power of water. It also explores water being from outer space, perhaps from asteroids, and the study of water on Mars. About 10% of the footage is from various NASA stock footage. This film won Audience Choice Award for middle school films in New Mexico. The Speech of Txai Surui - The memorable and historic speech by Txai Suruí at the opening of COP-26: UN Conference on Climate Change, in Glasgow, Scotland (2021). Txai Suruí is a Brazilian indigenous activist leader, of the Paiter-Suruí ethnic group. She was the only indigenous person in Latin America and the only Brazilian to speak at COP-26. Her speech was made in front of more than 100 heads of state and echoed across the planet. The film was shown the following year, at COP 27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, in a panel in which Txai Surui was participating. Film made in stop motion and 2d animation by the high school students of Escola Parque (Multimedia Project). Monarchs in Motion - Monarchs in Motion is a documentary exploring the life cycle, migration, and conservation of monarch butterflies. It highlights their unique 2500-mile journey, the threats they face, and the efforts of scientists and communities to protect them. The film inspires collective action to preserve these butterflies, with extensive footage from their wintering grounds in Michocan, Mexico. Clean Seas - Directors Cut - Teens from California that love the ocean did some research on how to protect it. Coastal tourist spots bring a lot of beachgoers, and the sunblock that they use hurts marine life (and possibly humans too) if it has the wrong ingredients. Phoebe Comes Home - While searching for the secrets of Dreamstone and their identities, Phoebe and Abby risk their lives to save the beautiful world around them called home. Together, they help each other and the community around them as they struggle to protect their land and heritage. Mysteries arise as Phoebe unravels the secrets in her small town, and realizes that they are connected to a global conflict. Deep in the marrow of her bones, she feels that all her hopes are in danger of being lost. A powerful gem called dreamstone appears at the heart of the mystery.
